About this deal

I had been reading a lot of Oriental philosophy, reading a lot of Zen Buddhism, reading the I Ching. Seconda lettura di Philip Dick, ha segnato la mia passione per la sua fantascienza visionaria, portandomi a leggere in breve tempo larga parte della bibliografia dell'autore americano. This is a very mature novel by Dick that is very different from his futuristic anything-can happen science fiction stories.

Dick explains that he is Zoroastrian in his theology believing in the Gnostic duality that the world has been created by an evil deity which is being overthrown by a wise mind. The world building and alternative Nazi policies are much more fully developed, giving the novel a satisfying depth - and I absolutely loved the subversive novel within a novel. The book argues that this world, described twice, although differently each time, is exactly the world we know and are familiar with. American society is peaceful and harmonious and is at peace with the other countries of the world; the war ends the Soviet Union.

This is my first foray into the works of Philip K Dick - and , no doubt like many other readers in the past few years, I was inspired to read the book by the television series. His book offers a new vision of reality - an alternative theory of world history in which the Axis powers were defeated - giving hope to the disenchanted. ly The Man in the High Castle inspires the boys to take the controversial stance that a Mars colony isn't worth genocide. It seemed like an overwhelmingly large number characters constantly consult the I Ching for guidance, which has no appeal to me whatsoever.

This is why Juliana is so disenchanted when she meets Hawthorne Abendsen and fins him and his situation different from his expectations. A third unabridged audiobook recording was released in 2014 by Brilliance Audio, read by Jeff Cummings with a running time of 9 hours 58 minutes. Dick hints at another Holocaust having taken place in Nazi-controlled Africa, the mere mention of which is more powerful and chilling than any overt scenes or exposition on the matter. Avram Davidson praised the novel as a "superior work of fiction", citing Dick's use of the I Ching as "fascinating".

Her husband Frank Frink is a craftsman who makes cheap imitations of old American artifacts in a Japanese occupied California that demand high market value. Philip K Dick trips the switches of our minds with his vision of the world as it might have been: the African continent virtually wiped out, the Mediterranean drained to make farmland, the United States divided between the Japanese and the Nazis. What this novel does best of all is remind people how close the Nazis came to winning the Second World War. Elsewhere, two SD agents confront Baynes and Tagomi, who uses his antique American pistol to kill both agents. All because some twenty years earlier the United States lost a war — and is now occupied by Nazi Germany and Japan.
