My personal favourite role is the murderer as I naturally thrive when I need to lie, deceive and deflect. Each turn, a group is sent out on a quest, but some of them are secretly traitors with the power to sabotage the mission. That means if you send the table down a dead-end all you can do is put your head in your hands and hope that somehow the murderer is so strident in their allegations that they draw suspicious as a mere consequence of their advocacy. And even though it means nothing, the tactile nature of giving away your badge feels like you're giving up something important.

But I think it would have worked better with an overall timer rather than mandating a hypothesis carousel. At this point the forensic scientist deals out six tiles that represent a series of questions that nobody is asking about a crime nobody committed. If I’m honest, I was ready to be cynical about a game that’s so obviously a mash-up of mechanics from other games rather than something truly new, but actually, Deception doesn’t feel like either of the games that inspired it.

They need to get everything right from a set of clues that are likely to end up being so misleading that all the scientist can do is giggle to themselves. Exploring some of the optional rules and variants in the rulebook might be necessary to make the game work best for you, but I’m glad the options are there. The premise is in the title: there’s been a murder and you’ve got to figure out who it is and how they did it.The Dice Game puts players in the shoes (or boots, I should say) of a bunch of rootin’ tootin’ cowboys ready to duel.
