Through a mosaic of memory and nostalgia, we observe as our unarmed protagonist navigates both her past and present.

Jag gillar stundtals skrivandet, speciellt hennes rytm och kapitelindelning, men hon behöver en mycket hårdare redaktör och lära sig sätta punkt innan hon förstör en bra mening, för this aint it tyvärr. I loved the descriptions of the 'thinking' classes and the contrasting descriptions against ira's own middle-class, Konkani family. On the other hand, Kartik is back in Mumbai after an interlude of 13 years, employed in a consulting company that pays him handsomely in exchange for soul-crushing work. This book is one long love letter to Bombay - scars et al - I just loved and totally dug the descriptions of matunga, fort, the Udupi restaurants and the Irani cafes. This is reflected in the language, each sentence feeling like a bevy of sensation without a single word wasted.Amrita Mahale’s debut novel Milk Teeth explores in arresting detail the Bombay of 90s, and then flitting to an idyllic past wistfully to ruminate on the Bombay that was and would never be again post the liberalisation of the Indian economy.

These things follow her into adulthood where her battle to resist the throes of falling in love come up against her need to be whole alone. Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall). And her - much like she does her friends and the man she is enraptured by - pushing us a safe distance away.Is this one of those post-modern works with no ending at all - a slice-of-life tale where plot structure, ending and closure is for 'the bourgies'? This is because, unlike her own, ‘their needs were thoughtless because they had the means to meet them.

Told in short vignettes oscillating between the present and the past, the narrative can feel jarring, and there is a tendency towards self-indulgence that hampers the potential for emotional insight, but Andrews nonetheless explores some important issues.Partly I think it’s to do with the subject matter -more the romantic relationship entanglements, which became a tad repetitive in nature (also I’m not a huge romance fan) and perhaps also to do with the narrator herself. They meet again, go dancing and spend the night together sparking a passion that consumes them both.
