Secondly, we were interested in adopting a systematic synthetic phonics programme which supported children’s early reading but also developed handwriting and spelling – the approach of NNP certainly addresses all of these areas. Performance in this area lags significantly behind that in reading, where only 11% fail to achieve level 4. The learner applies and extends phonics code knowledge, handwriting and new vocabulary, whilst developing language comprehension, via 12 Mini Story pages. No Nonsense Spelling is a complete spelling programme, created by the Babcock LDP Literacy team in response to Devon teachers concerns over implementing the New Curriculum.

There is a huge push (and rightly so) for strong literacy foundations to be built in the first year of school, but with children entering formal schooling as young as four and half years old, the question is to be asked, “What about the play?
