About this deal

As Alix digs deeper, she begins to question her new friend’s motives for meeting her in the first place, and through a series of reversals, comes to fear she’s been set up in a twisted game of cat and mouse. As breathtaking story is revealed within story, readers peel back the layers to find revenge, a meditation on the damage done by the past, and characters who could walk into the room and sit on your sofa.

After all, isn’t that why we love unrealistic horror movies, because we can watch but still feel detached from it all? Whereas Josie and Alix are written in the third person and everything the happened between them in the past, the Netflix documentary sections offer a different dynamic. It doesn't end there, these two women seemingly share frustrations with each of their respective partners. My recommendation is to just go into the reading of this book with an open mind and without any preconceived notions as to what you think is going on, because that will probably change many times throughout. The reason I am not giving None of This Is True five stars, which I thought I would for 95% of the book, is that I feel conflicted about the ending. Although one of the twists that comes later on is easy to work out, the rest of it lies largely in the realm of unpredictability.

While podcaster Alix Summers is out with her husband to celebrate her 45th, after the big song, a woman named Josie approaches the table and informs her that she is her TRUE birthday twin---down to the year.

Q: Were there any plot and character revelations you were especially excited to finally give the reader? Even if Josie was the instigator, even if she wasn’t groomed, Walter still willingly entered a relationship with a teenage girl (while married with kids, and having a mistress). With her dream home and two lovely children, Alix is happily married, yet recent issues in her marriage leave her seeking a distraction. Josie tells Alix she is about to make big changes in her life and wants Alix to document it for her podcast.

Peeling apart the layers of her backstory, discovering her childhood, her role as a mother, and the lies she has told, was pure heart-pounding fun! Why do you think Josie imbues this relatively ordinary coincidence with so much importance and meaning? She wears wide-legged trousers and a top made of two pieces of black cloth held together with laces at the sides. It’s like listening to a concerto slowly raises its tempo and as you reach the ending, you hear the crescendo: that’s moment the earth shattering revelation squeezes your heart, you barely breathe! She issues a quiet “Bye then” as she turns to leave and Alix beams at her and says, “Happy birthday, birthday twin! At the end of a particularly sinister and AMAZING horror movie, I always have that moment where I'm GRATEFUL to leave the theater, blink in the sunlight, and feel part of the less ominous real world. They stand marooned for a moment by a sign that says “Please wait here to be seated” and Josie gazes around at the early-evening diners and drinkers, her handbag pinioned against her stomach by her arms.

One of the characters is an alcoholic, and it felt like they were given a free pass for their bad behavior, like I was expected to sympathize with them and understand why they behaved so poorly. At the same time, themes include pedophilia, alcoholism, and physical and emotional abuse, so it is not a fun read. but… there’s something about Josie… 🤔…something bizarre…she wears denim… ALL the time… heck her curtains are denim… look 👀.Josie ponders her life and choices throughout the novel, at one point wondering how she might leave her family and live elsewhere. A few days later, Alix and Josie bump into each other again, this time outside Alix’s children’s school. She’d looked up the menu online earlier, so she’d be able to google stuff if she didn’t know what it was, so she already knows what she’s having.
