Ghana gets an indulgent interview with the (black) Prime Minister, Dr Kwame Nkrumah, then a quick side trip to Togoland - British Togoland, which was joined to Gold Coast and is now part of Ghana, and French Togoland - now Togo. I am paraphrasing, but near the start Gunther says this is not a book about his travels in Africa, but a description of the contemporary history and politics of Africa. Gunther’s descriptions and narrations agreeably relieve the fairly heavy doses of outright political statistics. He says of the 44 countries or political sub-divisions of the time he visited 'most, including all those important', which is good enough for me.

Of course he does differentiate carefully between the degrees of advancement of indigenous populations, and I think that on the whole his comments and conclusions are eminently fair. The racial tensions which exist in one section are almost wholly different from those prevailing in another. Gunther’s reporting without following in his footsteps — which God forbid — it is satisfactory to me to testify to his thoroughly comprehensive treatment of Liberia and his proper, if uninspired, account of French West Africa.xi 960 pp, with clr dj, clr map on pdp, silver gilt titling to spine, 1 or 2 b/w diagrams, a cood copy of this autobiographical adventure into Africa, still with original dust jacket. Defenseless Africa, already conquered and divided, but with only a fraction of its potentials realized or exploited, lies there today—perhaps the hope of the world, perhaps destined to chaos.

Portugal - Portuguese policy seems to consist of keeping them from any modern advancements, and retaining slave labour. Gunther wrote his classic memoir Death Be Not Proud, published in 1949, to commemorate the courage and spirit of this extraordinary boy. He is able to describe the unfamiliar by using familiar references and he beautifully describes details. When I picked this up off my shelf, finally mentally prepared to tackle it, I imagined it to be a book of around 500 pages, judging by the spine thickness. The present government is “grounded in part at least on three of the most unpleasant, of human characteristics — fear, bigotry, and intolerance. First edition hard back binding in publisher's original black cloth covers, silver title and author lettering to the spine, end paper maps.

This section goes deep into British governance, then the Mau-Mau, and covers off Zanzibar and relationship between the Sultan and the British Resident. He loves interviewing major figures himself, and in fact my major criticism of the book is that too many pages were spent detailing the time Gunther spent with Dr. He gets to travel through the beginning of the Algerian Crisis, the Mau Mau Rebellion, and Apartheid, all related to the wider phenomenon of decolonization and the reduction of European influence throughout the continent. To preserve these articles as they originally appeared, The Times does not alter, edit or update them. Gunther in his short chapter devoted to French West Africa has treated the subject somewhat inadequately. In overall good-to-very good used condition with minor signs of age, handling and storage - rubbing to edges and dj spine a touch tanned. A visit to all 44 African countries, including Haile Selassie's Ethiopia, Albert Schweitzer, Tubman of Liberia, Nkrumah, and the Mau Mau of Kenya. From the viewpoint of a fellow correspondent, ''The Africans'' is highly readable, uncluttered by statistics and marked by many an insight for the newcomer and more seasoned hand alike.

Missing DJ, light shelf and edge wear with corners lightly bumped, some foxing to endpapers and edges of reading block.Great Britain at this point seemed to realize that colonialism was over, yet at this point they seemed to simply be trying to postpone the end indefinitely. WITH ''The Africans'' David Lamb has produced a timely and valuable work that cuts through many of the distorted images propagated by Africans themselves, by the continent's apologists and by its detractors.
