Her husband Patrick is uninvolved and she begins to feel increasingly isolated as her fears that the woman from the maternity ward is stalking her are dismissed by authorities as psychosis.

There are some other themes here, too, including how women struggle with the heavy responsibilities of motherhood and how bonding can so easily turn to an unhealthy anxiety. Little does she know that her role as guardian will be challenged that very night, when she encounters a dirty, smelly disheveled woman who attempts to steal her babies. But that’s the point of him, Melanie Golding wants us to feel empathy and sympathy for Lauren and her situation, to make it more believable when the story kicks in and boy doesn’t it just kick in.

I often read Little Darlings (digitally, on my phone) while rocking my baby to sleep in the evenings, which made the whole topic of babies being switched or stolen even more visceral, as it really is an indescribable fear. I am not going to divulge any more of the plot as I don’t want to spoil it by giving too much away, however it’s safe to say that if you like a psychological thriller that will keep you guessing until the very end, then this is definitely a book for you.
