His hero, Roy Grace, may not be the most lively cop, nor the most damaged by drink, weight or misery, but he’s one of the most believable James thanks his “amazing editor” but surely an editor amazing or otherwise would know you can’t microwave tin foil, understand the meaning of enormity, not demote Detective Inspector Glenn Branson to a Detective Sergeant towards the end of the book (sloppy) and not misspell my name – twice (deliberate or sloppy?) James just gets better and better and deserves the success he has achieved with this first-class series * Independent on Sunday *Meanwhile, there’s the usual sideshows that we associate with a James novel – his private life with wife Cleo and strange young son Bruno, problems for his loyal supporting cast of hard-working cops, and the malign presence of ACC Cassian Pewe looming over it all. I spent the start of Left You Dead faintly distracted by the names Niall and Eden Paternoster. This may be because of being traumatised for life by an incident getting out of a paternoster (one of those moving series of compartments now outlawed on health and safety grounds) at the University of Leicester …
